Embarking on a transformative journey, the 26-years old music maven Rishab Rikhiram Sharma brought his acclaimed ‘Sitar For Mental Health’ music series to Indian shores after a successful tour across the United States and Canada. In a series of captivating performances which unfolded in cities like Chennai, Jaipur, Goa, Mumbai, and Delhi, Rishab aimed to spotlight mental health awareness through the power of classical music and the meditative sounds of the sitar.

Drawing from his illustrious lineage of luthiers and nurtured as the youngest disciple of the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar, Rishab’s musical journey has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. A trailblazer in his own right, he recently graced the U.S. President Joe Biden’s Diwali celebrations and mesmerized audiences of over 60,000 live attendees and 500 million at-home viewers at the NGR Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Speaking exclusively with News18 Showsha, Rishab Rikhiram Sharma got candid about his musical journey.

Here are the excerpts:

Can you share with us your earliest memory of the sitar and what you, what drew you to the instrument specifically?

Growing up surrounded by the craftsmanship of sitars, surbahars, tablas, and harmoniums due to my family’s heritage in manufacturing musical instruments, I had the privilege of witnessing renowned maestros like Ravi Shankar, George Harrison, Amjad Ali Khansaab, Raees Khansaab, and Shahid Parvez frequenting our household and store. Despite this exposure, my father, an expert in the field, instilled in me a deep respect for these instruments, refraining from letting me touch a sitar until I learned to play it properly.

During my formative years, I found solace in experimenting with instruments at my school, particularly drawn to the sitar’s unique qualities like the resonant sound produced by its sympathetic strings and the ability to bend notes, a feature not commonly found in guitars. The process of creating different sounds by adjusting the bridges and tweaking the instrument fascinated me. I often reflect on my father’s guidance in shaping sounds that evoke a sense of meditation and healing, a skill I aspire to master in my musical journey.

Being the youngest disciple of the world-renowned Pandit Ravi Shankar, what were some of the most important lessons you learned from him?

From my revered Guruji, I imbibed a crucial lesson in discipline, specifically the importance of rigorous practice, known as Riyaz. Witnessing his unwavering commitment to his craft was truly inspirational. Even at 90 years old, he would commence his day at 4:30 a.m., dedicating two hours to intensive practice before embarking on his daily routines without fail. I vividly recall observing him delicately covering his sitar with a cloth to muffle the sound as he ran his fingers over the strings, ensuring minimal disturbance to others.

Guruji’s day would unfold seamlessly, punctuated by rituals and prayers that he diligently observed. His teachings often intertwined humor and wisdom, with his playful wordplay leaving a lasting impact on me. He emphasized the concept of ‘kartab ki vidya,’ the art of performing, advising me to engage consistently in practice, highlighting the direct correlation between effort invested and progress attained. His words echo in my mind, urging me to seize every available moment for practice and to begin each day with earnest dedication before pursuing other endeavors.

How has your family’s legacy in making musical instruments and your background in music production and economics influenced your approach to music?

As the son of a renowned sitar maker who crafted instruments for esteemed musicians such as Ravi Shankar and George Harrison, I’ve had a unique insight into the art and craftsmanship of the sitar. Growing up surrounded by the intricate process of transforming raw materials into melodic instruments, I developed a profound understanding of the sitar’s construction and intricacies. Witnessing my father’s mastery in sculpting a mere log of wood into a resonant sitar allowed me to grasp the manufacturing aspect of this timeless instrument.

Moreover, my musical journey took an enriching turn when I had the privilege of learning from the legendary sitar virtuoso, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Under his tutelage, I not only honed my sitar skills but also delved into the realm of music production, a self-taught skill that I developed. This expertise enabled me to explore recording techniques, production nuances around the sitar, and ways to enhance the listener’s auditory experience significantly.

Furthermore, my background in economics provided me with a strategic business mindset, empowering me to make informed decisions that complement my musical prowess. Beyond being a musician, I perceive myself as a versatile individual with a keen business acumen, capable of leveraging my skills effectively and making sound entrepreneurial choices to propel my passion and craft.

Your sitar for Mental Health series is noted for its emphasis on mental well-being through music. What inspired you to marry these two elements together?

Amidst the challenging backdrop of the pandemic, a turbulent period marked by loss and personal struggle, I found myself grappling with the profound loss of my beloved grandfather, a figure of immense significance in my life. Overwhelmed by grief and despondency, I withdrew from music, my cherished passion, retreating into a cocoon of despair within the confines of my room.

However, in my darkest hour, music emerged as a beacon of solace, working in tandem with therapy and counseling to provide a path towards healing. The pivotal moment arrived when I reached out for my sitar after a prolonged hiatus, sensing a profound connection and a resurgence of emotions long subdued. It was in the act of rediscovering this musical companion that the true value of music, once lost and now found, resonated deeply within me.

Driven by this transformative experience, I felt compelled to share the restorative power of the sitar with the world, viewing it as a potent tool for mental well-being. Through my own journey of healing and self-discovery, I recognized the potential for music, particularly the sitar, to serve as a catalyst for mental wellness. This realization sparked the inception of my initiative, ‘sitar for mental health,’ a platform aimed at not only raising awareness about mental well-being but also amplifying the therapeutic essence of music. By leveraging the emotive depth of my sitar, I endeavor to amplify the conversation around mental health and inspire others to explore the healing capacities of art and music in times of adversity.

Can you describe the process of creating a set list for these events that aim to facilitate introspection and emotional healing?

My approach to curating ‘Sitar for Mental Health’ events revolves around a continuous cycle of learning through experiential practice and soliciting feedback from my community. By fostering open communication and actively engaging with participants, I strive to tailor each event to cater to their preferences and needs, ensuring a meaningful and impactful experience for all involved.

The evolution of these events reflects this collaborative process of refinement and adaptation based on feedback received. While the fundamental elements such as breathing exercises have remained constant, I have fine-tuned aspects like the introductory segment to strike a balance between varying preferences for shorter or longer intros. This adjustment seeks to strike a harmonious middle ground that resonates with the diverse preferences of the audience.

Moreover, a key innovation has been the integration of audience interactivity, fostering a space for individuals to engage in heartfelt conversations and connect on a deeper level. By encouraging participants to share thoughts on topics like regrets or aspirations, I aim to create an environment where vulnerability is met with respect, paving the way for profound shared experiences and emotional connections among attendees.

The transformative impact of these interactions is palpable, as the energy in the room shifts towards one of openness, appreciation, and unity. This transformation not only enhances the overall ambiance of the event but also fosters a sense of communal well-being and positivity among participants.

As I navigate through different cultural contexts across countries like India and the US, I remain attuned to the unique preferences and expectations of each community, adapting my approach accordingly. By listening attentively to the voices of my audience and incorporating their insights into the event curation process, I strive to create inclusive and engaging experiences that resonate deeply with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

How do you measure the impact of your performances on audience mental health? Are there any memorable responses you have received?

The aftermath of each ‘Sitar for Mental Health’ concert is a profound testament to the impact of music on emotional well-being. Following every performance, I am inundated with a flood of messages from attendees, each sharing their unique experiences and emotions stirred by the music. I often witness individuals moved to tears, visibly overwhelmed by the depth of their feelings as they approach me, seeking solace and connection.

In these vulnerable moments, I have embraced countless individuals, offering comfort and support through gestures as simple yet profound as a hug. The overwhelming response from the audience is overwhelmingly positive, with an overwhelming majority expressing deep appreciation for the healing power of music. Many have shared intimate stories of personal loss, recounting how my music served as a source of comfort during their moments of grief and loneliness, akin to a warm embrace in their time of need.

However, amidst the outpouring of gratitude and warmth, there have been instances where individuals felt triggered by the emotive stories shared during the concert, evoking a range of powerful emotions, both positive and challenging. These moments underscore the importance of fostering candid dialogues around mental health, even when met with skepticism or criticism from those resistant to such discussions. Yet, I firmly believe that breaking the stigma and silence surrounding mental health is paramount in today’s society, inspiring me to continue advocating for this vital cause through my music.

While some may question the fusion of music and mental health, I see it as a necessary and compassionate endeavor, a platform through which individuals can engage in meaningful conversations and find solace in shared experiences. Despite the occasional skepticism, the overwhelming outpouring of love and gratitude in the form of heartfelt messages, emails, photos, and videos reaffirms my purpose and fuels my passion for using music as a vehicle for healing and connection.

Performing at President Joe Biden’s Diwali celebration, featuring on his Instagram is quite an accolade. How was this experience for you and has it influenced your career in any way?

Performing at the White House for the Diwali celebration was an unforgettable and enchanting experience that transcended borders and embraced cultural richness. The elaborate decoration, resplendent with traditional elements like Gendaful, Persian carpets, rangoli, lights, and diyas, imbued the White House with an ambiance reminiscent of a grand palace, evoking a sense of home and familiarity.

Being the first Indian instrumentalist to grace the halls of the White House and usher in Diwali celebrations was a profound honor that filled me with a sense of pride and reverence. Although initial uncertainties arose regarding the presentation of traditional Sitar music in a setting unaccustomed to such performances, I remained steadfast in preserving the authenticity and essence of our musical heritage.

Navigating logistical challenges, such as the absence of a riser for my performance due to technical constraints preceding the president’s speech, led to collaborative discussions that culminated in a thoughtful solution—a beautifully arranged bench with an elegant carpet, providing me with a stage to share my music without compromise. Drawing inspiration from the teachings of my revered Guruji, a stalwart ambassador of our musical tradition, I approached the performance with a commitment to upholding the sanctity and integrity of our art form.

The audience, composed of esteemed members of the diaspora, numbering around 500 to 600 individuals, including dignitaries and distinguished guests, bore witness to this momentous occasion. The significance of the event was further amplified by the opportunity to meet and interact with the president, vice president, first lady, and other White House personnel, creating indelible memories for me and my family.

Indeed, the entire experience was a poignant and cherished chapter in my musical journey, encompassing cultural exchange, diplomatic representation, and the timeless resonance of music’s ability to unite hearts and transcend boundaries.

The solo performance at the NRG Stadium attracted a vast live audience and even more at home viewers. How do you prepare yourself for such a large scale event and how do you ensure the message about mental health is conveyed through music?

Although ‘Sitar for Mental Health’ had yet to come into existence during that period, my commitment to promoting Indian culture and music remained unwavering. The particular performance I recall was a monumental occasion that left an indelible impression on me, showcasing the sheer magnitude and grandeur of the event.

The day commenced with an early soundcheck at 4 a.m. ahead of the evening show, set against the backdrop of stringent security measures and meticulous preparations. As I stood on stage before an audience of over 65,000 individuals, the vast sea of faces blurred into a mosaic of tiny dots, a testament to the immense scale of the gathering.

Despite the overwhelming size of the audience and the elaborate arrangements, I found myself immersed in a state of musical transcendence, wholly absorbed in the melodies emanating from my sitar. The intensity of my focus precluded any external distractions as I strived to deliver a performance that epitomized the depth and brilliance of Indian classical music.

Driven by a deep-seated determination to demonstrate the beauty and cultural richness of our musical heritage, I poured my heart and soul into the performance, endeavoring to captivate the audience and leave an indelible mark through the power of music. The experience encapsulated a profound sense of purpose and mission, fueling my resolve to showcase the magnificence of our musical tradition to a global audience.

Reflecting on your performance at Woodstock 50 reunion, in what ways do you believe Sitar music and Indian classical music more broadly continues to resonate with global audiences today?

The 1960s heralded a significant surge in popularity for the Sitar, catalyzed by the groundbreaking collaborations between Pt Ravi Shankar, my revered Guruji, and iconic musicians like George Harrison of the Beatles. This musical fusion not only propelled the Sitar into the global spotlight but also underscored its versatility and enchanting appeal to audiences worldwide. However, in recent times, the prominence of the Sitar has somewhat waned, lacking a prominent figure akin to the legendary stature of Guruji.

Inspired by my Guruji’s legacy and vision, I aspire to fill this void by carrying forward his musical heritage and infusing it with contemporary influences that resonate with the current generation. While engaging in diverse collaborations spanning genres like hip hop, singer-songwriter compositions, and jazz, I remain steadfast in upholding the purity and authenticity of traditional Sitar music. My approach to these partnerships emphasizes a fusion of modern sounds with the intrinsic soul and essence of the Sitar, steering clear of attempting to mimic other instruments like the guitar.

By embracing both innovation and tradition, I endeavor to present the Sitar not as a mere instrument but as a powerful medium of artistic expression, free from imitation and true to its unique character. This commitment to honoring the roots of Indian classical music while fostering cross-genre collaborations forms the bedrock of my artistic journey, paving the way for the global resonance and continued relevance of this timeless musical tradition. In my view, collaborations serve as a bridge that connects diverse musical landscapes, fostering mutual enrichment while propelling the Sitar into new realms of creativity and appreciation.

In your view, what role does music play in mental health? And how can individuals incorporate it into their mental health practices?

Music has always held a profound capacity to uplift spirits and nurture well-being, a sentiment deeply rooted in ancient traditions as evidenced by the concept of Raag therapy, known as Rakshakitsa. Embedded in our Vedas, Raag therapy harnesses the therapeutic potential of music, specifically through the healing vibrations of Raagas. My mission is to contemporize this age-old practice, bringing it into the mainstream consciousness of today’s society.

Central to this endeavor is the notion of creating the right ‘mahaul’ or atmosphere for music to be truly transformative and beneficial for mental health. Just as one wouldn’t play an Aalap Jodh Jhaala during a boisterous club night or blast rap music in a solemn courtroom, the environment in which music is experienced plays a pivotal role in its impact. The significance of setting and context cannot be understated, as the right ambiance enhances the receptivity of listeners to the therapeutic essence of music, such as the Sitar.

Through the creation of meditative spaces conducive to introspection and tranquility, individuals can immerse themselves in the soothing melodies of the Sitar, unlocking a realm of emotional resonance and well-being. Countless testimonies from individuals spanning diverse backgrounds underscore the profound effects of this musical therapy, with many attesting to its capacity to alleviate mental distress and enhance coping mechanisms in the face of adversity.

By highlighting the symbiotic relationship between music, environment, and mental health, I advocate for a mindful and intentional approach to music consumption, emphasizing the potent role of melodies in fostering emotional wellness and resilience. The transformative power of music lies not just in its melodies but in the mindful receptivity of listeners, creating spaces that nurture healing, solace, and emotional fortitude in an ever-evolving world.

In the ongoing challenges and stresses in today’s world, how do you see the relationship between music and mental well-being evolving?

Witnessing the impact of my work unfold over time has been truly transformative, as I observe a shift in people’s approach towards music consumption and its therapeutic benefits. Beyond the realm of Sitar music, individuals are exploring a diverse array of genres that resonate with them on a deeper level, serving as sources of solace and resilience in challenging times.

Within my circle of acquaintances and friends, I have noticed a growing inclination towards sharing musical discoveries and recommendations as a means of mutual support and well-being. The exchange of recordings and suggestions has become a poignant reminder of the power of music to uplift spirits and foster emotional healing. It is heartening to witness this sense of community appreciation for music and the arts, accompanied by a heightened awareness of the profound impact that intentional music listening can have on one’s mental wellness.

This evolving landscape of musical exploration and conscientious engagement underscores a shift towards a more mindful approach to music consumption, one that prioritizes the emotional resonance and healing potential of diverse musical genres. The growing recognition of music as a potent tool for self-care and emotional regulation reflects a broader cultural awakening to the transformative capabilities of artistic expression. In embracing this shift, individuals are not only fostering personal well-being but also cultivating a deeper sense of community and connectedness through shared musical experiences. The feedback and interactions I receive serve as a testament to this evolving narrative, affirming the intrinsic connection between music, emotional well-being, and communal appreciation in today’s society.

Are there any specific projects or collaborations within or outside of music that you’re particularly excited about?

I am thrilled to share details about my upcoming project, the ‘Sitar for Mental Health Tape,’ set to release next month. This tape offers a compelling journey through five traditional ragas, spanning from dusk to dawn. Among these ragas is one that holds a unique blend, crafted by merging two distinct ragas to create a harmonious fusion.

While rooted in tradition, this tape has been meticulously produced with a contemporary flair, infused with the signature Rishab Rikhram twist that resonates in tracks like Roslyn and Chanakya. This blending of classical elements with modern sensibilities brings a fresh perspective to the timeless art of Sitar music, offering a dynamic and immersive listening experience.

Furthermore, I am delighted to announce that this project features collaborations with talented artists, adding an enriching depth to the musical tapestry. I have poured my passion and creativity into this endeavor, and I am eager to unveil this musical tapestry to the world.

Stay tuned for the release of the ‘Sitar for Mental Health Tape,’ a testament to the intersection of tradition and innovation in the realm of music, promising a captivating and transformative auditory experience for listeners.

What future directions do you hope to explore in combining music with mental health advocacy?

I am enthusiastic about exploring new avenues of artistic collaboration, particularly with poetry as a storytelling medium intertwined with music. The idea of synchronizing poetry recitals focusing on mental health or personal struggles with musical expressions that echo the emotional depth of the words resonates deeply with me. This dual narrative approach not only provides verbal cues for listeners but also enriches the storytelling experience, amplifying the impact of the combined art forms.

Looking ahead, my focus remains on expanding and elevating the quality of productions and experiences we offer to audiences. While budget constraints have posed challenges in fully realizing my creative vision, support from partners like HSBC has been instrumental in translating our artistic aspirations into reality. This collaborative partnership has empowered us to curate immersive experiences, such as incorporating fragrant gajras instead of traditional festival bands for our audiences, creating a sensory ambiance that enhances the overall mood of the performances.

These enhancements, both visual and olfactory, contribute to a multisensory experience that elevates the ambiance of the auditorium, setting the stage for an enchanting musical journey. It is a testament to the transformative impact that the right kind of support and collaboration can have in realizing artistic visions and immersing audiences in a tapestry of harmonious sensory stimuli.

As an artist straddling the realms of classical music tradition and contemporary production, these unique collaborations and enhancements serve as a testament to the transformative possibilities that emerge when rooted in tradition yet open to innovative artistic expressions.

How do you envision the future of classical music, especially for the younger generation?

Encouraging individuals to pursue their musical passions while balancing the demands of everyday life is a delicate balance. Recognizing the challenges of solely relying on music for sustenance, I advocate for inspiring individuals to engage with music as a meaningful pursuit outside of their regular commitments. By creating music that resonates with a broader audience while maintaining authenticity and reverence for artistic traditions, we can cultivate a shared appreciation for quality productions and compositions that captivate the masses.

In addition to fostering a vibrant musical landscape, it is crucial to cultivate a supportive community that champions mental well-being and self-care practices. Through my work, I strive to underscore the therapeutic benefits of music, highlighting its potential to serve as a source of solace and rejuvenation during challenging times. Whether through the upcoming tape release or other musical endeavors, my aim is to provide listeners with a refuge, a sonic haven they can turn to for relaxation and inspiration.

By promoting good mental health practices and offering musical experiences that cater to emotional well-being, I hope to inspire individuals to embrace music not only as a form of artistic expression but also as a tool for self-care and personal growth. Ultimately, my mission is to nurture a musical culture that not only entertains and uplifts but also fosters individual creativity, resilience, and mental wellness.

Having achieved so much at a relatively young age, what advice would you give to young musicians and mental health advocates starting their journey?

Despite any accolades or recognition received, I still perceive my journey as merely in its infancy, a humble beginning much like a small star on a vast sky. The ultimate goal that propels me forward is a global reach for the Sitar, envisioning a world where every individual has the opportunity to experience the transformative beauty of this instrument in a profound and meaningful way. I am driven by a relentless passion to share the magic of the Sitar with audiences worldwide, ensuring that its enchanting melodies resonate far and wide.

However, the path to achieving this ambitious vision demands patience and steadfast dedication. Learning the art of the Sitar is not a fleeting affair akin to a short yoga class or workshop; it’s a long and arduous journey that requires unwavering commitment and resilience. Reflecting on my own struggles and moments of resistance towards practicing the Sitar, I recall the pivotal role of consistent mentorship and motivation in guiding me along this musical odyssey. Despite initial reluctance, the moment I immersed myself in the music during each Sitar class, I found myself captivated and deeply passionate about the art form.

This experience underscores the importance of support and encouragement from parents, mentors, and friends in nurturing a budding musician’s journey. By providing gentle nudges and fostering a supportive environment, individuals embarking on musical endeavors can find the inspiration and motivation needed to persist through challenges and setbacks. Whether it’s a parent guiding their child’s musical pursuits or a friend encouraging a peer’s practice routine, a simple act of support or inquiry can go a long way in nurturing a lifelong love for music and artistic expression.

Is there an aspect of your work, a particular project that holds special meaning to you?

I have a multitude of exciting projects on the horizon, each contributing to a diverse and dynamic musical landscape I am cultivating. In addition to the ‘Sitar for Mental Health Tape,’ I am actively engaged in crafting a collaborative album that embodies a fusion of innovative Sitar music with contemporary genres like lo-fi, hip-hop, and beats suited for rap. This collaborative endeavor seeks to create music that transcends boundaries, resonating with listeners in diverse settings and atmospheres, a collection that reflects my creative spirit and aspirations in my twenties.

My primary focus remains on producing high-quality music that not only captivates audiences but also leaves a lasting imprint, serving as a testament to my artistic journey and growth. Through this collaborative album, I have the privilege of collaborating with talented producers hailing from cosmopolitan cities like Los Angeles, New York, Berlin, and London. The diversity of influences and creative energies converging in this project promises an extraordinary sonic experience that transcends geographical boundaries and cultural distinctions.

The sheer exhilaration and creative energy that imbue these projects are indescribable, fueling my passion and dedication towards crafting music that resonates on a profound level with audiences. Each composition, each collaboration, is a step towards creating a melodic legacy that encapsulates the essence of my artistic expression during this pivotal stage of my career. These projects are not just musical endeavors; they are creative manifestations of my journey, each note and rhythm echoing the depth of my artistic exploration and vision.
